Leaked Walmart anti-union training video: "We don't think a labour union is necessary here"
A recently surfaced Walmart training video is shedding new light onto Walmart's anti-union tactics.
The company, who closed five of its U.S. stores in April 2015, due to "plumbing issues", effectively laying off over 2,200 workers in the process is taking steps to prevent its workers from forming a union in its stores.
"Our company prefers to have open and direct communication with our associates - we don't think a labour union is necessary here. And because our associates have said time after time that they don't want a union, we usually don't spend a lot of time talking about them."
In the nine-minute video, Walmart explains, "Unions get almost all of their money from monthly dues and initiation fees."
The company also brings light to their official policy, in which they are touting that they are "pro-associate" citing their open door policy as a way to ensure that workers are able to speak on their own accord. One of the actors in the training video states, "Frankly, I don't think Walmart associates should have to have someone speak for them. It's just not that kind of place."
Walmart joins other larger retailers (ie. Target) who are pouring resources into anti-union material in an effort to interfere in workers’ right to form a union and to be free from interference and intimidation from their employer.
