Man sues Wal-Mart, alleges racial discrimination, retaliation

walmart lisbon maine charged Lisbon, ME – January 23, 2013 – A man of Ethiopian descent who worked at Walmart in Lewiston for four years is suing his former employer, claiming the company discriminated against him because of his race and in retaliation for his complaint about discrimination and a workplace injury.

Wal-Mart denied a complaint made to the Maine Human Rights Commission.

Walmart turns a blind eye to factory safety

Bentonvillle, AR – January 4, 2013 – When Walmart's chief executive, Michael Duke, appeared at a Council on Foreign Relations meeting in New York this month, a raucous crowd of protesters awaited him. Walmart was confronting reports of bribery in Mexico, a wave of labor demonstrations in the United States and, perhaps most critically, questions about a grisly fire that had killed 112 workers at a Bangladeshi garment factory used by several Walmart suppliers.

Labor Groups Pan Walmart Plan to Bring Oversight Approach Used in Bangladesh to the US

Dhaka, Bangladesh – January 4, 2012 – A new plan for audits of labor conditions at Walmart’s US distribution centers drew skeptical reactions from labor groups Thursday. According to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the plan on December 28, Walmart’s plan is “similar to” the labor monitoring system the company currently uses for its overseas suppliers in countries such as China and Bangladesh.
