Step 2: Sign UFCW Canada Membership Cards

With the guidance of an organizer, you and your co-workers sign UFCW Canada membership cards. The employer never sees these cards. UFCW Canada organizers are sworn to protect confidentiality.

When at least 40% of the employees in a workplace sign UFCW Canada cards, the union can apply to the Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board for a vote.

Step 3: Vote for UFCW Canada

The Labour Board conducts a secret ballot vote in your workplace generally five days after the union applies for one. No one will know how you voted. If a majority of those who vote say YES, the Labour Board can certify UFCW Canada as your legal bargaining agent.

Now that you have a Union.

Your employer and UFCW representatives (including workers from your bargaining unit) then sit down to negotiate a collective agreement. This agreement - the union contract - sets out the wages, benefits, working conditions, job security and other rights of the workers.

If 55% of the employees in your workplace sign a union card, the Prince Edward Island Labour Relations Board can automatically certify the union. It can be that easy!

Step 3 (if necessary): Vote for UFCW Canada

If at least "50% + one" employees in your workplace sign a union card, but less than 55%, the Labour Board will likely hold a secret ballot vote.. No one will know how you voted.

If a majority vote YES for UFCW Canada, the Labour Board can allow you and your coworkers to join the Union

Ten days after UFCW Canada has applied for certification, the Labour Board can hold a secret ballot vote of all the employees. The vote will likely take place at your workplace. If a majority votes YES to UFCW Canada, the Labour Board will likely certify UFCW Canada as your legal bargaining agent. (If less than 55% of the employees participate in the vote, the Labour Board can order a second vote.)

How To Form A Union In Alberta

Step 2: Sign UFCW Canada Membership Cards

With the guidance of an organizer, you and your co-workers sign UFCW Canada membership cards or a petition. The signatures on the cards or the petition cannot be older than 90 days. Your employer will not see the cards or the petition.

When at least 40% of the employees have signed a union card or a petition UFCW Canada can apply to the Alberta Labour Relations Board for certification. The Labour Board will likely hold a hearing within 10 days of the union's application. The purpose of the hearing is to make sure 40% of the employees have signed either a union card or a petition.

Step 3: Vote for UFCW Canada

Two weeks after UFCW Canada has applied to the Alberta Labour Relations Board for certification the board can conduct a vote of all the employees to see if a majority want the union. The vote is generally held at the Labour Board Office. It is a secret ballot vote. No one will know how you voted.
